Boulder Wall Construction

Boulder Wall Construction Across Minnesota

Boulder walls bring the look of native Minnesota stone to your yard while solving real grade and erosion problems. Hand-placed, properly drained, and built to outlast the property.

  • Natural stone aesthetic
  • Heavy-duty retention
  • Great for lake lots

What we build, and how we build it

When a yard calls for something that looks like it belongs on a Minnesota lake lot — not a subdivision — boulder walls are usually the answer. Big natural stone, hand-placed, with the rough faces turned out and the joints tight. They handle grade changes, shoreline protection, and slope retention without ever looking like a manufactured product.

We source boulders from regional quarries in sizes that match the job. Smaller 18-24 inch stone for garden terraces and planters. Larger 30-48 inch stone for structural walls, shoreline edges, and walk-outs. Every stone is placed with intent — we're not dumping rock in a row. The face is set, the back is wedged, and the seam above is broken so the wall is locked in by gravity.

Boulder walls are a great fit for lake lots, rural acreage, walk-out basements, and any property where natural materials are part of the look. They pair beautifully with rip rap shoreline work, mulched plant beds, and timber accents. We've built boulder retention for everything from a single planter at the front door to multi-tier walls running the length of a back yard.

The honest tradeoff: boulder walls take longer than block walls and cost more per foot at taller heights, because each stone is hand-set and the equipment to move large rock is heavier. The payoff is a wall that looks like the land grew it — and that nobody will ever mistake for cookie-cutter hardscape.

Our process

Every boulder wall construction project follows the same five steps so you know exactly what's happening on your property and when.

  1. 1

    Site walk & stone selection

We meet on-site, talk through the look, and pick the boulder size range that fits the wall height, the property style, and your budget.

  2. 2

    Excavation & base

We dig a trench wide enough to seat the first course at least 1/3 below grade, then place compacted base for stability.

  3. 3

    Drainage behind the wall

Filter fabric, washed rock, and drain tile go in before any stone is placed above the base course.

  4. 4

    Hand-placing the stone

Boulders are set with the skid steer or excavator and then nudged into final position by hand. Joints are broken course-to-course and the face stays consistent.

  5. 5

    Backfill, grade, finish

Backfill is placed and compacted in lifts behind the wall, and the surrounding grade is shaped to drain away from the structure.

Materials & equipment

We invest in the right materials and the right machinery so the work holds up through Minnesota winters.

  • Regionally quarried Minnesota and Wisconsin granite, limestone, and fieldstone boulders
  • Stone sized 18-48+ inches depending on wall height and aesthetic
  • Class 5 base, filter fabric, washed rock, and perforated drain tile
  • Skid steers and mini-excavators with stone grapples and forks
  • Hand tools and rock bars for final placement and fitting

Real job: Shoreline boulder edging on a Central MN lake

A lakeside homeowner had a section of bank that was failing every spring. We graded the shoreline back to a stable slope, placed filter fabric, and hand-set a single-course boulder edge to lock the bank in. We blended the new stone into existing rock so the work disappears. Two days on-site, one bank that's no longer washing into the lake.

Frequently asked questions

Single-stone walls are typically 24-48 inches tall. Above that we either step the wall in terraces or transition to an engineered block wall with geogrid. We'll tell you on the walkthrough what makes sense for your site.
