Dirt Work & Excavation

Excavation & Dirt Work in Central Minnesota

Most outdoor work fails or succeeds before any finish material goes down. We handle the dirt work — excavation, grading, drainage, and site prep — that everything else sits on.

What we build, and how we build it

Every patio, driveway, retaining wall, and landscape install starts with the dirt underneath it. We've seen too many jobs from other crews fail in their first or second winter because the dirt work was rushed — settled slabs, sagging walls, water running toward the house. The visible finish work is the easy part. The dirt is what makes it last.

We run skid steers, mini-excavators, and compact dozers — the right size of machinery to get into back yards, lake lots, and tight side yards without tearing up what you don't want torn up. We also know when not to bring a machine and to do a small job by hand. The goal is to leave the property cleaner and better-drained than we found it.

Common dirt work projects: site prep for new patios, driveways, sheds, garages, and pole barns; grading and re-grading yards that have settled or pool water; drainage fixes for wet basements, soggy lawns, and washed-out beds; trench work for drain tile, downspout extensions, gas, water, electric, and irrigation; tear-out and haul-off of old concrete, old walls, and decommissioned features.

Drainage is the dirt-work category most homeowners under-think and most regret later. If water is sitting against your foundation, dumping off the roof in the wrong spot, or running across the patio every time it rains, we'll find the actual source and fix it — usually with some combination of regrade, drain tile, downspout extensions, and a clean swale that moves water somewhere it belongs.

Our process

Every dirt work & excavation project follows the same five steps so you know exactly what's happening on your property and when.

  1. 1

    Site walk & utility locates

We meet on-site, listen to the goal, and call in Gopher State One Call to locate buried utilities before any digging.

  2. 2

    Demo & strip

Existing concrete, old walls, sod, or topsoil is removed and either hauled off or stockpiled for re-use.

  3. 3

    Excavate & rough grade

We dig to engineered depth, shape the subgrade so water drains where it should, and load out spoil material.

  4. 4

    Compact & base

Subgrade is compacted in lifts. Where the project calls for it (patios, slabs, walls), Class 5 base is placed and compacted next.

  5. 5

    Final grade & cleanup

Topsoil is spread, the surface is finish-graded, and we clean tracks, the street, and any path the equipment took.

Materials & equipment

We invest in the right materials and the right machinery so the work holds up through Minnesota winters.

  • Bobcat and Caterpillar skid steers (track and wheel)
  • Mini-excavators ranging from 3-ton to 8-ton
  • Plate compactors and walk-behind rollers for base prep
  • Drain tile, washed rock, filter fabric, and pop-up emitters for drainage work
  • Dump trailers and dump trucks for spoil haul-off and material delivery

Real job: Re-grade and sod install on a new build

A new construction homeowner had a lot that was rough-graded by the builder but draining toward the foundation. We re-graded the yard with positive slope away from the house, extended downspouts underground to pop-up emitters at the property edge, tied in fresh topsoil, and rolled out new sod. Five days on-site, dry basement, and a yard that actually looks finished.
